This year, Dinosaur Designs marks a 40-yearmilestone.It’s a celebration not just of history, but also of the creative spirit that sits at the heart of Dinosaur Designs and the enduring artistic partnership of its Co-founders and Creative Directors Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy.
Through its handmade sculptural homewares and jewellery, Dinosaur Designs’ distinctive aesthetic and experimental production has built a following in Australia and around the world, with freestanding stores in Australia, London and New York, as well as representation in stores and galleries across five continents.
Dinosaur Designs’ anniversary is also a celebration of the craftsmanship that has defined their identity for four decades. It underscores the company’s commitment to the handmade, both in its handmade practices and the enduring appeal of its art-led designs. In their studio in Redfern, Sydney, Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy have created a world where art, design and making live under one roof. It is a space filled with history that continues to evolve with intention, where every curve is considered and every pigment is mixed by hand as each resin form is created, and where every piece carries within it the imprint of care. The studio remains the centre of the Dinosaur Designs universe.
Louise Olsen explains that it is this hands-on, experimental approach that allows Dinosaur Designs to produce objects of exceptional quality and beauty. “Creating our work here in Sydney brings a sense of discovery to the making of every piece. And while the company has expanded, our creativity and designs are still informed by our love of art and shaped by curiosity and imagination. ”Dinosaur Designs offers a complete range of handmade homewares and jewellery.
With sculptural resin forms, brass and silver objects and accents, the collection evolves and responds to the now while maintaining a distinct, timeless visual language across every piece. Says Stephen Ormandy, “Dinosaur Designs’ visual language is built on a philosophy of experimentation through colour and form. Working with resin is like working with paint; the heart of our practice was built when we were students working in our studio at art school. Every piece we make is handcrafted, passing through many pairs of hands in the process, giving each piece the slight differences that make it unique.”
To mark the 40-year milestone, Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy have designed a collection, Rock, which gathers and reshapes many of the recurrent themes to capture the spirit of Dinosaur Designs. Says Stephen: “We have looked at the very essence of our visual language and reinvented some of our favourite designs as part of this new collection”. Adds Louise: “Nature has always been a core inspiration. It’s fitting that a collection inspired by the earth and its forms and titled ‘Rock’ should mark our anniversary.
”Rock is an evolution of Dinosaur Designs’ collections, referencing natural geological forms and featuring a palette of Pool, Cloud, Rose Swirl, Pollen, Lychee and Cappuccino. The homewares collection is dominated by the iconic shapes that have become the touchstones of Dinosaur Designs collections, expressed across organic vases, bowls , platters and servers in the signature resin.
Rock jewellery delicately balances boldness and finesse, weaving resin, silver and gold across necklaces, bangles, earrings and rings. For Dinosaur Designs, 40 years is a celebration of the past, but also of the creative force that continues to shape what’s to come. The Rock 40t h anniversary collection will launch in October 2025 in all Dinosaur Designs stores across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, New York, and London, as well as online .Rock’s campaign was photographed by Pierre Toussaint and styled by IlkinKurt and Heleena Trahanas.
