YOU DON'T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO HAVE AN ADVENTURE

You don’t need to get on a plane to experience some of the best food and fashion from around the world.

In 2020, we discovered the appeal of armchair travel, exploring new destinations and revisiting old favourites through books, films and social media. This year, we’re keen to venture a little further afield – but that doesn’t mean a trip to the departure lounge.

Instead, now is the time to absorb the best the world has to offer through its culture – whether it’s cuisine, style, music or design. And you don’t need to go far to find it: a visit to the Strand Arcade sets the scene for an unforgettable global adventure in fashion and food.

Be Inspired by These Style Destinations

When it comes to building a sartorial signature, there may no longer be any rules, but a set of guidelines can still prove useful. Look to these leading style centres for their ethos as much as their inspiration – then go forth and create your own look.

London style

Edgy and eclectic, London is the place where almost anything goes. Fancy wearing a sequin dress with trainers? Or a delicate lavallière blouse with a fiercely tailored blazer, à la Harry Styles? No one will bat an eyelid here. But the real secret to dressing like a Londoner is to master the art of the mix, combining high-street with high-end pieces. Londoners also appreciate their country’s fashion heritage and will often incorporate it into their wardrobes via a dainty Liberty print or some sharp Savile Row-style tailoring.

Italian style

Whether they’re wearing jeans or a suit, Italians are not afraid of a bold, often flamboyant style – prints are louder and colours more dazzling here. But for all this exuberance, Italian men and women stay consistent to their personal style, preferring well-made pieces that they can wear year after year. It helps that they’re meticulous about the cut and fit of their clothing, and tailor every piece to perfection.

Japanese style

While Japan’s capital Tokyo is known for its individual styles and youth-centric culture when it comes to fashion, there’s still a strong sense of tradition across the country – with traditional Japanese designs, cuts and techniques still used, like shibori (a resist-dyeing process where fabric is bound, folded or twisted to create a pattern) and origami (folding). Japan’s eclectic mix of old and new styles guarantees timeless pieces that will get you noticed.

Australian style

As you cast your eye across the globe, don’t overlook what we have in our own backyard. Style here largely falls into one of two camps: streamlined silhouettes with a hint of athleticwear, or gleefully feminine pieces adorned with prints and ruffles. Both approaches are united by an easy, relaxed and distinctly unfussy feel.

Tempt your tastebuds with these cuisines

For a uniquely Australian flavour of a more literal kind, look no further than our local cuisine, where innovative producers and restaurateurs have embraced a range of native Australian ingredients. At Koko Black, premium-quality dark chocolate is infused with bush botanicals like lemon myrtle, whipstick wattle and spotted gum honey, while macadamia nut is prized for its crunch.

For a more classical option, it’s hard to surpass Italian food. While it’s easy to think of pizza or pasta as a national cuisine, the country is actually divided into numerous foodie regions, each with its own ingredients and method. Bologna is home to tagliatelle and classic Bolognese sauce; fettuccine hails from Rome; penne from Liguria, and so on. At The Restaurant Pendolino, up to 15 varieties of pasta are made by hand each day, all drawing influence from their region of origin.

If you want something a little more casual but still cosmopolitan, Romolo Espresso Cucina does contemporary Italian dining and great coffee with flair, in a setting that could be straight out of a Fellini film.
